Gastric Sleeve Q & A

What is gastric sleeve surgery?

Gastric sleeve, or sleeve gastrectomy, is one of many bariatric surgeries available at Advanced Surgeons. While never an initial option for obesity treatment, bariatric surgeries can help you lose a lot of weight and manage or prevent the serious health complications that come with morbid obesity.

Gastric sleeve is a restrictive surgery, meaning it limits the amount of food your stomach can hold to restrict the amount of food you eat. Advanced Surgeons offer it as a minimally invasive surgery, so the incisions are small and don’t leave a lot of scarring. Minimally invasive techniques also limit post-surgical pain and bleeding.

During the surgery, your surgeon places a laparoscope (long, thin, lighted camera) through one of a few small incisions. Using a projected image from the laparoscope, they guide tools through other small incisions to remove around 80% of your stomach. Then, they close the remaining stomach with surgical staples into a banana-shaped pouch.

Am I a good candidate for gastric sleeve?

You have to undergo a careful evaluation at Advanced Surgeons in order to find out if you’re a good candidate for gastric sleeve surgery.

Bariatric surgeries like sleeve gastrectomy require dedication before and after the surgery, and your provider must make sure you’re ready for that. They also make sure you’re generally healthy enough to recover.

You may be a candidate for gastric sleeve surgery at Advanced Surgeons if you:

  • Have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher
  • Have a BMI of 35 or higher with obesity-related health conditions
  • Are ready to make drastic, long-term lifestyle changes
  • Can lose a little weight beforehand
  • Have seen no significant weight reduction from lifestyle and diet changes

In preparation for your surgery, you need to undergo a series of tests. Your surgeon may require you to get blood tests, chest X-rays, lung function tests, and others before clearing you for gastric sleeve surgery.

What should I expect after gastric sleeve surgery?

After a successful gastric sleeve surgery, you lose weight quite rapidly. Typically, conditions such as sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and diabetes improve too.

Your full recovery from gastric sleeve takes about three months. For the first eight weeks, you need to consume a liquid diet.

After that, your provider helps you slowly reintroduce solid food into your diet. You need some rest time after gastric sleeve, but most people can start integrating physical activity into their routines about 30 days after surgery.

Advanced Surgeons support you throughout your recovery and aftercare. The practice offers nutrition services, support groups, and other professional help to make sure you get the best possible outcome from gastric sleeve.
