Robotic Surgery

Robotic Surgery

Robotic surgery—also known as robotic-assisted surgery—allows surgeons to perform complex procedures with more precision, flexibility and control than standard techniques. It is also minimally invasive, which means that the surgery is performed using tiny incisions which are significantly smaller than a typical incision. In some cases, it may also be used in certain open surgical procedures.

At Advanced Surgeons, our specialists are highly trained (via a da Vinci Xi Skills Stimulator™) in performing robotic surgery using the da Vinci Xi® Surgical System. da Vinci is the most widely-used robotic surgical system in the U.S. and Europe and is designed to treat a wide range of conditions.

What are the advantages of robotic surgery?

With robotic surgery, surgeons can see the surgical site and perform complex, delicate procedures that would otherwise be challenging or impossible to accomplish with more traditional methods.

Other benefits include:

  • Faster recovery and return to everyday activity
  • Fewer surgical complications, such as infection
  • Less blood loss and pain
  • Less scarring
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Significantly smaller incisions

How is robotic surgery performed?

During the procedure, the surgeon is seated at a computer console that is typically in the same room as the patient, with hand controls that manipulate interactive robotic arms controlled from the console. Using magnified, high-definition 3D imagery as guidance, the surgeon uses the instruments attached to a few of the arms to perform the procedure through a series of quarter-inch incisions. The robotic arms have several degrees of rotation (exceeding the rotation of the human wrist), motion scaling and tremor reduction allow for refining the surgeon’s hand movements {which filter out any tremors in the surgeon’s hand movements.}
