BMI for Men: What’s Healthy and What Is Not?

BMI for Men

BMI for men is not something you like to talk about or you may not even know about but it is critical. BMI, or body mass index, is a measurement of the amount of body fat you have compared to muscle and tissue. In short, a BMI should be within the normal range. If it is too high, then you are at risk for various health complications. If it is too low, your body is not getting the nourishment it needs.

What Is Normal BMI for Men?

For men, the amount of stored fat is slightly less than that for women. However, for those who are in the normal range, this means that your BMI is at 18.5 to 24.9. This is a calculation of your height and weight. In this range, which is considered optimal, your body is not at any additional risk for health complications related specifically to being overweight.

What Is Underweight?

Being underweight is also an important consideration. If your BMI is under 18.5, you are considered underweight. This indicates that you are not getting the nutrition your body needs to function properly. You could be taxing your organs. An underweight BMI for men is dangerous.

What Is Overweight BMI for Men?

There are a few additional levels for those who are above the 24.9 level. Consider the following.

• If you have a BMI of 25 to 29.9, this indicates you are overweight. Your risk factors for health complications are elevated.

• If you have a BMI of 30 to 39.9, you are obese. This means you are at a high level of having health complications.

• If you have a BMI over 40, you are considered morbidly obese. You have an extremely high level of risk and, in most cases, already have health complications related to your obesity.

Why Does BMI for Men Matter?

There is no doubt that BMI matters when it comes to your health. With a high BMI, you are at an increased risk of complications that include type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and heart disease. These are all diseases that can lead to premature death.

What can you do about it? Working to maintain a healthy BMI for men means they are working out daily and that they are eating a balanced diet. Weight loss may significantly help you to reach your goals. You can improve these numbers if you try to do so with proper support.
