The Road to Inner Peace

Grace Biggio has long been at peace with herself. In fact, she has never been ashamed of being overweight. “I used to say that I was a healthy fat girl,” she says, “I’d go to the beach, swim and dance.”

But two years ago, she wanted to do an event that entailed a lot of walking. She had to buy a rolling walker, and was told by a doctor she’d have to lose weight to undergo a knee replacement. Her weight was holding her back.

As a speech pathologist with a background in massage therapy, the 57-year-old Poughkeepsie, New York resident felt that, “I’m not really a ‘surgery person,’ but physically I got to the point I knew that I didn’t have a choice.”

After trying numerous diets without success, she was spurred to a decision: to undergo weight loss surgery.

Finding Care and Compassion at Advanced Surgeons

Since childhood, Grace was always overweight, a trait she shared with other family members. In addition, she is a survivor of sexual abuse, which she points out is associated with obesity by using food to cope.

As a therapist herself, Biggio has “done the work” on her own life. That includes a lot of therapy. She characterizes herself by saying, “I’m a very outgoing person, and very positive.” Her decision to explore surgery was part of that.

Biggio had family members who, a decade ago, had benefitted from Advanced Surgeons. She followed up with them and met Dr. Anthony Maffei, a fellowship trained surgeon who also takes a lifestyle approach to care, including nutrition and exercise. “I was nervous,” admits Biggio of the appointment. “I didn’t want to screw this up. One of my big fears was gaining the weight back after the surgery.”

But at Advanced Surgeons, she found the empathy and support of an entire team. Dr. Maffei and staff answered all of her questions, in person and subsequently through email, and his assistant spent a good hour of intake with her as well. She also received the important ongoing counsel of the staff nutritionist prior to and following surgery.

In fact, the recommended doctors for pre-surgical testing were so good as well, says Biggio, that she now uses one of them for her continuing care. “Everyone is so wonderful at Advanced Surgeons,” she says, “from the front desk to the back room.” That includes the special shout-out she gives to nutritionist Janet Borra, RD, as well as Robin Mariconi, Dr. Maffei’s scheduling coordinator and Lisa Giorgi at the front desk.

As a therapist, Biggio really appreciated how the staff at Advanced Surgeons, and Dr. Maffei, combine medical expertise with compassion and understanding. “If I was having a rough time, we talked about how to deal with it.”

“Dr. Maffei is very personable,” explains Biggio. “I felt like I could ask him anything. I told him about my fears. He is very engaging, and made me feel comfortable and respected. As someone who is fat—I call it the ‘dirty F word’—there is a certain perception in the outside world that we’re just not trying. But I never felt that attitude at the doctor’s office. I was listened to and not judged.”

Sleeve Gastrectomy and Beyond

As part of the extended and comprehensive services at Advanced Surgeons, Grace attended a support group prior to her surgery. From that, she felt she knew what to expect. “I was ready; I did the work,” she says.

Of the surgery itself she feels, “It was easy.” The same day, she was doing laps around the hospital hallway. “I had a great surgery and a great recovery.”

At her first appointment with Dr. Maffei six months prior to surgery, Biggio weighed 374 pounds. Today, fourteen months following her surgery in June 2018, at 5’4” she’s down to 197 pounds. She’s on the way to her goal weight of 175 pounds, a number that was reached in collaboration with nutritionist Janet Borra. Biggio’s success was achieved with sleeve gastrectomy, the most popular weight loss surgery. Family and friends have consistently provided steady support, even giving her clothes at every stage of her weight loss. “There are weird things I thought I’d never wear,” she confides with a laugh.

Post-surgery was methodical, as everything is prescribed: when and what to drink or eat. “It’s actually harder now that I can eat almost anything,” she admits of the challenges.

Exercise helps with those challenges. “I had been working out prior to surgery, and then got even more serious,” Biggio explains. She goes to a gym to work out with a personal trainer. Some days are better than others, but she pushes on with the treadmill, free weights, kettlebells and a weighted ball. She even pounds a sledgehammer. “And I love it!” she proclaims.

Life Lessons

Grace Biggio reflects on the person she has become with wisdom and grace. It is also her message to others.

“The real key is to be where you are. Don’t judge yourself. Be kind, gentle and loving of yourself. My stretch marks are my badges of honor, because my body and my weight, and how I carried it, speaks of my surviving what I went through, what I’ve learned and how I’ve grown. In my job, I work with children aged three to five, some of whom can’t walk, talk or even move. So particularly when I go to the gym, I think about how blessed I am to have what I have.”

But she knows it can be hard, so her final piece of advice: “We’re all doing the best we can. That’s all we can do. Just keep chugging along.”

At Advanced Surgeons, we specialize in changing lives one patient at a time. If you are ready to get healthy and feel great, Advanced Surgeons can help. Request an appointment today.

Trinity – Sleeve Gastrectomy*

Note: Individual results may vary.

My name is Trinity, I am 33 and, my story began one day when I met an amazing man. I was alone raising my son for the last 8 years. I met Paul and his wonderful family. His daughter a 2 year old ball of fire. Even though I was happy I didn’t feel like I should. I noticed I was gaining weight and couldn’t run and play with her or my son who was already 11. I then started to have a hard time sleeping and staying awake at work. I married Paul, and noticed how large I was getting. I was keeping Paul awake with my snoring, forcing him On The couch. I tried all kinds of diets, pills and weight loss products. I wasn’t happy with myself. Wasn’t performing my job as well as I should. I was falling into a depression, and gaining more weight.

One day I heard of the gastric bypass on the radio. I figured I would check it out. I went to a seminar about it put on by Dr. Maffei. I learned of the gastric sleeve. After weighing my options I felt it was a better choice. I set up an appointment, and met with the doctor. I was so upset to find out that 90lbs over weight it wasn’t enough!? My bmi was 37. So discouraged Dr. Maffei said I should do a sleep study. I did and was diagnosed with sleep apnea. That was the key to be accepted in having the sleeve. I was told not only will I loose weight to be healthy, live longer, and be able to play with my kids. I could also be cured of the sleep apnea, and be able to perform to my fullest at my job.

I have lost 90lbs in the last year. I am healthy, happy, and will be around for my children for a long time. My husband and I have bought a new house. We are planing to renew our vows in a few years. I want to be able to fit In A normal size wedding dress for my dream wedding! I never in my wildest dreams thought I could be so happy with myself. I am a nicer, happier person after this life change.

I owe it all to my Dr. Maffei! Thank you for my life back,

Trinity

Denine – Gastric Sleeve*

My name is Denine and I am 39 years old. In December of 2016 I had the gastric sleeve procedure and in 6 months I have lost 90 lbs. I wore a size 24 and now wear a comfortable size 10. My BMI was 41 and now is a normal 25. I am so happy with my decision and my only regret was waiting until I was almost 40 years old to start living my life. Dr. Maffei has completely changed my life. He is the key to my success and happiness. He, and the tremendous support of his team, made this process easy and understandable. He accurately laid out all the information regarding this life changing decision and left me feeling confident and comfortable. I now eat everything I want but because of the knowledge and motivation I gained I have no desire to ever eat carbs again. Coming from an Italian family were pasta and breads were my normal, I now “choose” to eat protein and veggies and absolutely enjoy it. I love my new diet. I love how I feel. I love looking in the mirror. And most importantly, I love myself which is something I never thought I can truly feel..

Hello,
My name is Erin Clancy and I am now almost 2 years post op. Dr Cerbona did my gastric sleeve surgery 2/2015. I am down 137 lbs and feel the best I have in over 20 years. I went from not being able to play with my kids, to hiking and chasing them while they ride their bikes. I am so grateful to the Dr’s and wonderful staff who helped me along my journey. People cannot believe my story when I share it. I have to prove it with old pictures. The best part is, when I went to visit my 97 year old grandmother this past summer, she hugged me and asked “where’s the rest of you”. I laughed and said “Gone with the wind”.

Thank you for helping me change my life.

Sincerely,

Erin Clancy

Weight Loss Before And After

Evelyn – Sleeve Gastrectomy*

Note: Individual results may vary.

In order to tell you the story of my surgery, I have to go back a couple of years so you understand how I came to my decision.

During a routine visit to my primary care physician in 2009, she mentioned to me about weight loss surgery. I listened patiently and after leaving, thought, who me? I would never have surgery to lose weight. I can do this by myself. Ha…Little did I know how hard it would be at this time of my life.

Going back, historically, I had lost 100 pounds when I was 23 and the weight stayed off through two pregnancies and I did not have a weight problem. Little did I know what Mother Nature had in store for me when I turned fifty-three years old. Mother Nature did a job on me and left me 6 years later obese, a worn out thyroid, knees that wobbled and hair starting to grey.

So after I left my doctor’s office in 2009, I attempted to lose weight but I seemed to hit a wall at all sides. So after losing about 20 pounds over six months, I fell off of the wagon and the weight came back plus a bit extra!

I returned to the doctor in 2010 for a checkup and was doing pretty good except for all the extra weight I was carrying. Again, my doctor talked to me about weight loss surgery and gave me a contact number for an informational meeting to learn what this was all about. I was still very skeptical as to actually having any surgery. Who in their right names wants surgery? Not me I said. However, with my husband in tow, we went to the weight loss seminar held at Putnam Hospital Center. We were greeted by Susana Dealmeida RN-BSN, who I later learned was the coordinator for the weight loss program. There were several people there and one of the doctors in the group that does this surgery gave a presentation on weight loss. He explained all the possible types of surgery available and what the requirements would be to be approved for this surgery. The medical group that he represented was “Surgical Intensivists, PC, with three surgeons. Dr. Thomas Cerabona, Dr. Ashutosh Kaul and Dr. Anthony Maffei. It was explained to those of us at this seminar that the medical group practices and does surgery at Westchester Medical Center and Putnam Hospital Center. I was very impressed with the seminar and went home to discuss this with my husband. Alas, I knew I had a lot of decision making to do regarding this surgery as it was a life style for how I would eat for the rest of my life. This decision took me one year to make. Finally almost one year later to the date of the seminar, I called and made an appointment and was scheduled for an office visit with Dr. Anthony Maffei.

I met with Dr. Maffei in August of 2011 and after my consultation with him, I knew I had made the right decision to have surgery. Dr. Maffei spent time answering my endless list of questions and explained all the requirements I needed to get done prior to surgery. I also learned that Dr. Maffei has just recently built a new home about two miles from where I grew up! We had a connection and a general sense of coming home to do the right thing for me was overwhelming.

Off I went and spent the next two months getting all the required medical approvals. Any time I had a question or needed to confirm that the doctors were forwarding the test results to Surgical Intensivists, I was greeted with pleasant and knowledgeable people from their office.

Also, for tests at Putnam Hospital and all training seminars prior to surgery, I was guided by Susana Dealmedia, RN-BSN, the coordinator of the program. My husband nicknamed her the ‘facilitator’! My entire tests were completed and I was scheduled for Surgery November 9, 2011. I was so excited and wanted the surgery to be over ASAP so I could begin my journey of losing weight.

Finally the day arrived and I signed in at Putnam Hospital Center. I was greeted by Nurse Susana and other staff prepped me for surgery. I met with Dr. Maffei prior to going into the operating room. His calm demeanor and a smile were my last memory before I went to anesthesia land.

It had been explained to me that there is always a second surgeon from the group assisting so I knew I was in the hands of not just one but two experts. Next thing I knew, I was done, awake and looking forward to getting up from the bed! I was a lady on the move and I was so excited that I had the surgery.

Dr. Maffei assured me that everything went well and to my surprise, told me that my gastric and internal anatomy was perfect! Nice to know I had ‘great’ insides! I was up later that evening and other than being tired, felt wonderful. I was not plagued by any gas pains and surgery pain was minimal where the instruments were inserted into my abdomen. Leakage tests were performed the following morning and I then spent the rest of the day, roaming the halls, visiting with Nurse Susana and my family. We all became great friends. Dr. Maffei kept a careful check on me and on the third day, signed my release papers. It was more than just signing papers, he gave me a new lifetime opportunity to lose weight and avoid weight related problems.

The Surgical Intensivists, PC, with three surgeons. Dr. Thomas Cerabona, Dr. Ashutosh Kaul and Dr. Anthony Maffei are an outstanding team of medical professionals. I could write many paragraphs about all the positives this medial group has. Rest assured, this group IS THE BEST AROUND. If someone is looking into weight loss surgery, this is the group that cares about the welfare of their patients, has years of experience and outstanding records of success.

It took me a year to decide, and I say to myself, ‘Why did I wait so long?”

Total weight loss: 106 lbs
Surgery Date March: 2011
Age: 38
Lives: Poughkeepsie, NY

“August of 2010 my primary Dr told me I was diabetic and if I did not lose weight in a few months he would put me on medication for it. I was allready on high blood pressure medicine for two years and had been overweight all of my life. The next three months I gained weight. I needed help and in January I went to the Surgical Intensivists seminar and made the first step to save my life. March 2011 I had my gastric sleeve surgery with Dr Cerabona.

Surgery was the best tool I could give myself to lose the weight and feel like I am part of this world again. No more high blood pressure medicine and I am no longer diabetic. I jogged a 5k last summer, ride roller coasters with my nephew, go Zip Lining, hike, bike and shop in normal size clothing stores. I have more energy, self worth and never get tired of people telling me it’s nice to see me smiling again.”

My name is Stephanie and I am 27 years old. I had the gastric sleeve procedure done on August 19th 2013. In 13 months I have lost 170 lbs. This surgery was more than just an operation to me. I changed my life. Before it I had 2 knee surgeries and gained 70 lbs reaching my max of 365. Dr. Meffei had said to me surgery is one day it’s what you do with the other 364. That is the best thing he could have said to me. I gave up soda, beer, fast food, processed food and I go to the gym 5 times a week. There are even some days I go to the gym twice. People should see this procedure as an opportunity to help change their life…I know it did for me.

Liana – Sleeve Gastrectomy*

Two years ago today, I made the best decision of my life. On April 25, 2016 I had bariatric sleeve gastrectomy surgery. I made this decision in Aug 2015 after a year of being diagnosed and treated for metabolic insulin resistance and pre diabetes. The doctor informed me it would only be a matter of time before I would end up with diabetes. She informed me that I should look into having bariatric surgery since diabetes runs on my dad’s side of the family. After watching several of my dad’s siblings pass away thru out the years due to complications with their diabetes. I did not want that for my life. At that moment I knew I had to do something to change my life for the better. I struggle with my weight as a young adult in my 20’s. I never paid any attention to it until I went to the doctor to have blood work done and there it was in black and white. I did everything in my power to try to lose the weight on my own before making the decision to have surgery. Due to the metabolic insulin resistance and pre diabetes I was not able to lose weight it was working against me. On Sept 2015 I attend a seminar regarding bariatric surgery and after hearing the doctor talk and patients who shared their story about their struggles with weight loss. I knew right then that I had to make an appt with Dr. Maffei. On Oct 2015 when I walked into the doctor’s office to see if I would be a candidate to have this procedure done. I weighed 264lbs with a BMI of 45. Dr. Maffei informed me that I was a candidate and that we would start the process and in 6 months he will perform the surgery. On the morning of my surgery I was scared and nervous. I knew that this decision was going to change my life forever and that it wasn’t going to be an easy journey from that day on. 2 years later I have lost a total of 94lbs and have kept it off. I weigh 170lbs with a BMI of 29. The metabolic insulin resistance and pre diabetes was gone a month after surgery. It has been an amazing 2 years. I feel great doing things I couldn’t do before because of the weight. I have learned sooooo much about myself thru this journey. This has changed me in so many ways. I’m so happy that I decided to go thru with the surgery. I’m very grateful and blessed to be on this continuous journey. I would like to say thank you to my family and friends for all the love and support they continue to give me. I love you all so very much. I would also like to say a BIG THANK YOU to Dr. Maffei and his incredible team of staff at Advanced Surgeons for their continuous support thru this journey. They have become my 2nd family for the rest of my life. The pic on the left hand side was taken 2 months before surgery Feb 2016 weighing 264lbs. The pic on right hand side was taken 2 months ago Feb 2018 weighing 170lbs. This journey is not over this is a life style change that I will continue with for the rest of my life.

Liana
